James & Ashley // Mile High Station

We've been excited about James and Ashley's wedding ever since we photographed their engagement session back in August. They are such kind, candid, fun loving and easygoing people, and they photograph beautifully.

They planned their day so that there was plenty of extra time before the wedding to enjoy the company of their family friends. They were both so relaxed and it was apparent that they were really enjoying their wedding day and each other's company, not just rushing through it.

Mile High Station was built in 1897 as a massive steel works factory, and was the perfect setting for the wedding. They did all of the decorations themselves, with the help of friends and family. James works as a professional in steel fabrication and welded together the tree that was the backdrop for their ceremony. They tied that in with the wire that they wrapped around all of their candles. The whole event was absolutely beautiful, unique and fitted them perfectly.

Gold & Aquamint Valentine

The idea of a holiday that celebrates love, and gives us an excuse to share tokens of our love for each other is absolutely wonderful. We decided to do a Valentines shoot, but wanted to avoid the traditional colors of red, pink and purple. Instead, we used a palate that we've been totally obsessing over lately; gold, aquamint, white and linen. We wanted to give the shoot a fresh, natural, woodland mood, and wanted a big portion of the shoot to focus on the idea of writing letters. (Receiving love letters is my favorite part of Valentines Day.) I hand painted the woodland Valentine cards for this shoot, and Jacob used incorporated those paintings into the invitation and other printables. I finished it off with some hand done calligraphy.

The dress was a concept I've had for a while, and my best friend, Whitney Watts created it by hand. I made the headpieces, arrowed heart, stole (with help from Whitney), rings, brooch, and caketopper, and Jacob made the cake. The tweed blazer, Peter Fox shoes, Breyer deer, and the entire place setting was salvaged from local thrift stores. Blossom of Durango made us this absolutely perfect bouquet. They really created a piece of art that added so much elegance to the shoot. I love the aspen bark that holds the bouquet together. The Oakhaven Permaculture Center was kind enough to let us tromp around their aspen grove.

Lauren Balenti was the perfect model for this shoot, and I had so much fun doing her hair, makeup, and candy striped nails for her.

Burlap & Knits

I handmade or thrifted all of the details of this shoot, save for a few teepee materials, earring and bangles. I made the oversized legwarmers, dusk grey scarf, acorn necklace dove feather headpiece, and built the teepee with one of Jake's students. Jake made the ring out of a found antler.

Elizabeth was a perfect model for this shoot, and I had a blast doing her hair and makeup while she totally took over my iPod. Jake and I were thrilled with the way all of the details turned out, and forgot about the cold just long enough to capture these images. Enjoy!

A Jose Villa Workshop // Santa Barbara Part I

I was so excited to attend this workshop in the San Ynez valley this summer. Jose Villa is one of my all time favorite wedding photographers, and some of the best people in the wedding business were there teaching, styling, and making the day a top notch event. I was totally impressed with the quality in every single detail about the day. It was a blast to meet such sweet, amazing, and talented people, (both vendors and attendees) and to photograph such a stellar styled shoot. Kelsey was an incredible model and so much fun to work with. She made my job easy. If you aren't familiar with some of the vendors below, you simply must acquaint yourself! We were so thrilled to photograph Joshua and Jenna for their engagement session. I've known Jenna for most of my life, and have memories of hide-and-go-seek and popcorn rich sleepovers with her, so this session meant a lot to all of us. Joshua is an artists and Jenna is a photographer, and they brought a basket full of goodies with them to add a personal touch to their shoot. They paid meticulous attention to the details of their shoot, and the look totally paid off, don't you think? They are so natural together and are such an incredible couple. We loved the colors and outfits they chose. Isn't Jenna's dreamy Gap dress just perfect?

Jeremiah & Morgan

Jake and I went to high school with Morgan, and years ago, she photographed our wedding. So it was super fun to turn the tables and get to do her engagement session. She and Jeremiah are an awesome couple, and had each other in stitches the whole time. It was wonderful to photograph in our old stomping grounds at the base of the Grand Mesa. Morgan's family owns beautiful vineyards, and we were able to see a Cedaredge sunset, something we miss dearly. Jake and I, along with Jake's mom, had a great time styling the details with fruit crates, barrels and little things that make up some of the roots of Cedaredge.

We were laughing with Amber about how she should write a book called "My Life as a Brumley & Wells Model" because we've photographed her so many times over the years. So we were feeling a little sentimental during this shoot...the senior portrait session. Amber is an incredible person, and is sure to go on to do incredible things. I was standing on the curb in Antigua, Guatemala, when I turned to the greeting of this woman behind me. I fell in love with her eyes, particularly the lids, how they draped like fringed tapestries over her eyes. She was beautiful, and I had a camera.

It was such a blast having James & Ashley in town for their engagement session. We've never worked with two people who can make each other laugh as much as James & Ashley can. Aren't they a handsome couple? After their session we had fun photo documenting them getting tattoos for each other downtown. I had never seen a tattoo being done before, so I was like a kid in at the aquarium. So excited for their unique Denver wedding!

It was a perfect evening on at the Spriggs' Ranch. It was a pleasure getting to know Hannah and Larry Myers, who tied the knot the day before in the same location. After a day of tubing down the Animas River, they got back into their tux and gown to spend the evening with us. Jake and I had a great time tromping through the fields, meeting Gracie the horse, watching Larry fly fish as the sun went down behind the mountains, and talking with Hannah. Congratulations, you two!

A Music Themed Picnic

We were totally honored not only to photograph Josef and Danielle, but to style their shoot as well. They chose a music/picnic theme. Danielle is an oboist and expert in archives, and Josef is a violin-playing scientist, so we had plenty to work with. We drew our inspiration from antique sheet music and touches of natural science prints. Joe and Danielle were laughing with us the moment we pulled out our cameras, and the session was an absolute joy. They are so in love and were so fun to work with. The best part of our jobs is being able to laugh with awesome people.

The O'Brien Family

The O'Briens just moved back to the States from Belfast, Ireland. A year ago they welcomed us into their home when Jake and I were in Ireland. All six of them came to our house in Durango, where we had a blast talking late into the night over s'mores and Billie Holiday. After photographing them in the Norris' beautiful home, we headed over to this overgrown, abandoned garden where we ate grapes and blackberries to all of our hearts' content. We adore all of the details in this shoot: the creme colored oxfords, the canvas toms, braided crowns and summer-casual bracelets. Thanks to the Kairalla and Norris familly for being so stylish and classy. We had unreasonable amounts of fun with you all!

It's that time of year again, and the Kairalla kids geared up for another shoot with Brumley and Wells. This time, we were fortunate enough to follow them out to their cousins' home in Little Rock, Arkansas. We were wowed by their beautiful house, completely designed by their mother with meticulous detail to every nook and cranny. It was like being inside of a work of art, and we decided to do this shoot in the house. We fell in love with the round windows in the playroom the most. We had outrageous amounts of fun with this fabulous family, and feel so fortunate for the time spend with them.

Jake and I had the pleasure of spending a day in New York and seeing Jake's brother Matt. Matt and Aaron have the coolest little apartment and we were thrilled to get to see their place and to see the city. But mostly, we were thrilled to see them. We spent our time poking around in cool clothing stores in SoHo, eating hotdogs, gaping a Time Square, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, and drinking hot coffee. Next time, we'll have to spend longer than a day.

Whitney is one of the coolest people we know. She modeled and did all of the styling for this Springtime shoot. I met Whitney in the 6th grade while dissecting a deer brain during a homeschooling class at a Messianic Jewish doctor's house. We were the only two girls not totally grossed out. The rest is history...and dress-up, and forts, and mad libs forever after. Whitney left this week for Haiti on a one way ticket. She's going to build schools, eat goat meat, and live on a roof. How we'll miss her!

Pompeii was an absolute wonderland. There were ancient paintings, mosaics, graffiti, pieces of ornate trim, columns and pottery around every corner. We had to wrench ourselves away to make it to Rome on time. We decided to put down our maps and water bottles when we reached the House of the Ancient Hunt for a little bit of photo shoot fun.

It was a total dream come true to be able to travel to Italy with our friends, Gabe and Carin. We've all been talking about road-tripping for years, so to be able to travel to Italy with them was almost too good to be true. We had a such fabulous adventures, conversation and, of course, many many photo shoots. We traveled from Florence to Positano, to Sorrento and Pompeii, and then to Rome. We'll never forget the wild rides in the rental car, the massive quantities of pizza, the hours and hours of conversation, and the endless random occurrences that kept us constantly laughing.

After a long afternoon of walking, we decided to take a seat on some steps by the grand canal, eat our pizza and soak in the sun. Venice is everything we dreamed it would be. It was simply magical. And no, it didn't stink. We had an amazing time wandering the streets, eating gelato two times a day, listening to the gondoliers' songs, sitting on the Rialto and watching the boats, and feeding the pigeons in San Marco's square. If you haven't been to Venice, you really, really must.

10 Hours in Paris

We landed in Paris in the late morning, and began our mad dash to see the Arc du Triumph, the Eiffle Tower, and Notre Dam. In between, we enjoyed an art show at the Grand Palace, a croissant, crepes, and a hot chocolate. Our packs were heavy, the rain was wet, and our feet were sore, but with a hot cocoa in hand and Parisian architecture in sight, who can complain?

The Twisted Pepper - Dublin, Ireland

It is always wonderful to meet up with friends in another country, when you have no phone, no internet, and no map. We met our friend Sweeney at the Spire, and she proceeded to lead us to her apartment, home to many other musicians and travelers. We had a great time wandering around Dublin and enjoying it's parks, eating in it's cafes, meandering in it's museums and sneaking into private chapels. We had an even better time with Sweeney, playing music and games, enjoying home baked cakes, sharing stories, and listening to her newest recordings.

On our last stay in Ireland, we spent the majority of our time backpacking, sleeping in hostels, and enduring the Irish bus systems, which was without a doubt a particular kind of fun. This trip, however, has been quite different in form. We've been inundated with the luxuries of warm showers, private sleeping quarters, and spectacular Irish hospitality at the Boyle's home in Dundalk. This is the guest bathroom right outside our room. Isn't it lovely
